THERAPEUTICPATIENTEDUCATION–DEFINITION — Therapeutic patient education (TPE) is defined as a practice aiming at “helping patients acquire or maintain the competenciesto self-manage at best theirchronic disease”. It aims at helping them(as well astheir families) understand their disease and their treatment, cooperate and assume their responsibilitiesin their own treatment, so that they can preserve and improve their quality of life (HAS (French national authorityfor health), 2007).

The objectives of therapeutic education are to allow patients affected with chronic diseasesto: understand their disease and the treatments, acquire and maintain competencies, manage their everyday life with the disease, prevent/manage crises, delay disease-related complications(tertiary prevention), improve medication compliance, maintain and/or improve the quality of life.

Considering the patient as an actual actor in his/her own treatment means it is necessary to provide accurate knowledge as well as help him/her put forward specific skills.
