Tooth whitening is a non invasive therapeutic option which allows to treat a large number of dyschromias. This therapeutic option is more and more used in daily practice.With the increasing demand, the number of products and the techniques have flourished.
The purpose of the article is first to describe the effects of the most widely used whitening agents on dental hard tissues, both on their mechanical properties, their biochemical composition and their histological structure. A review of literature is based on the studies conducted both in vitro and in-vivo, researched in the PubMed medline database, as well as on various articles related to this matter.
Whitening agents generate changes in the dental structure and the composition of dental hard tissues. These changes must be taken into account in the clinical context and particularly when the practitioner must choose the concentration of the agent.
