The digital impression provides, in the armchair, a threedimensional image of the oral and dental volumes thanks to an optical system coupled with a computer. From this optical impression, a specific software develops a virtual master model allowing to perform the different stages of Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) .
Several studies show that this technology is at least as accurate(1, 2, 3) as the conventional impressions.
Buying an optical impression device is rather an expensive investment. It seemed useful to us to study the characteristics of the main systems on the market to help the practitioners who were not trained in CAD-CAM during their university program to choose the most suitable equipment for their needs and expectations.
