Nowadays, long term and very long term orthodontic retention is more and more common. A successful treatment is conditioned by its ability to retain a good result and avoid relapse. It is therefore essential to know and tomaster the various retention systems and there clinical procedures.
The goal of this article is to help general practitioners getmore familiarwith the commonly used retention devices. This work was done with a non systematic review of the literature and the study of clinical procedures advised by academic and private experts.
This clinical overview will describe removable retention appliances and their construction criteria, as well as direct and indirect clinical procedures of fixed bonded retainers and their making criteria.
