A descriptive epidemiological survey was conducted in order to determine selection criteria for restoration material used on deciduous teeth. A questionnaire was sent to 16 french paediatric odontology teaching hospital units, to 32 randomly selected practioners registered with the Société Française de Pédodontie (SFP : French Society for Pedodontics) and to 32 omnipratitioners randomly selected on the registry of dental surgeons practising in the Alpes-Maritime area (South of France). Results show that 13 practioners and two paediatric odontology hospital units have already discarded amalgams to the benefit of cosmetic and adhesive restorations. Cements are seldom used. 65.6% of the interrogated omnipractitioners never treat children and it seems that tend to use new materials less than teaching practitioners of SFP members. Generally speaking, patient co-operation and dental hygiene, as well as pulp proximity, play a considerable part in the practitioner's choice of material.
