Transpalatal arch (TPA) is an orthodontic appliance of simple construction and easy manipulation. It is highly useful and practical in dentofacial orthopaedics. The biomechanics of transpalatal arch activation renders this appliance particularly interesting. Its actions can be summarized in three clinical situations as symmetric V-bend, asymmetric V-bend, and step bend. The present article explains the significance of TPA and emphasizes various forms of activations as well as their consequences on teeth.
