The therapeutic decision-making is based on the best compromise between the patient's request, the clinical diagnosis, the esthetic possibilities and the good function achieved at the end of the treatment.
The orthodontist must be aware of the criteria of functional assessment of the manducatory apparatus, so that he/she can properly adapt his/her therapeutic approach in order to provide functional and esthetic results to every patient. For that purpose, the orthodontist must include in the clinical examination a systematic screening of signs and symptoms of TMDs.
Thanks to this screening, the orthodontist will be able to define and adapt, for each of his/her patients, the therapeutic objectives and procedures, the necessary precautions and the therapeutic follow-up during the active phase of the treatment, but also the long-term follow-up. The practitioner must also assess the patient's capacity of adaptation before and during the treatment of occlusal and functional rehabilitation.
This responsible attitude will provide patients a good and sustainable functional and esthetic quality of life.
