This article describes the case of a 12-year-old girl, referred for the treatment of a severe generalized gingival overgrowth compromising the success of her orthodontic treatment. A rigorous diagnostic approach allowed to diagnose a hereditary gingival fibromatosis (a rare gingival disease of genetic origin, isolated or associated with other genetic syndromes, causing a fibrosis of the gingival tissue). The 7-year-follow-up treatment highlights the importance of a close collaboration between the periodontist and the orthodontist, the necessity of a periodic therapeutic follow-up and underlines the problems due to recurrences after surgical procedures such as the excision of excess gingival tissue.
