Occlusal contacts obtained during swallowing indicate the natural position of Maximal Intercuspal Occlusion. Those observed in Centric Relation are different. In which position should MIO be placed : In a conceptual position "guided" by the practitioner or in a physiological position self-determined by the patient?

This article describes a fast, reliable and repetitive clinical protocol allowing to check and/or find back the concordance between maximal intercuspal occlusion and interdental contacts which occur during swallowing. The use of an anterior jig, with no retropulsive action, associated with an optimal positioning of the tongue, allows the patient to find alone and very accurately his/her natural Swallowing Occlusal position.
